Unified by design: Strengthening school safety through integration

A reflection from PASS Directors Michael Garcia and Guy Grace

Between the two of us, we have spent a lifetime walking school hallways, sitting in district meetings, and working side by side with educators, law enforcement, and security professionals who share one goal: keeping students safe.

Our perspectives come from different places, but our purpose is the same.

Michael: I have spent more than two decades helping schools unify their safety strategies, from secure entryways and access control to real-time response systems. Today, through my work with HID Global’s K-12 Safe Schools initiatives and as a PASS Director, I help districts bridge the gap between technology and practicality.

Guy: My experience started inside the school system itself. As the former Director of Security and Emergency Planning for Littleton Public Schools, I saw firsthand how quickly a day can change and how preparation makes all the difference. Now, with ASSA ABLOY Global Solutions and PASS, I focus on helping districts create safer, more connected environments built on the lessons we have learned in the field.

Together, we have learned that true school safety is not about buying more hardware or software. It is about connection. When people, technology, and policy work together, schools do not just react to threats; they are ready for them. That is the heart of being unified by design.

The evolving school safety landscape

Anyone who works in K-12 knows that keeping students safe today is more complex than ever. Schools are no longer nine-to-three institutions. They are community centers that stay active long after the last bell rings. Athletics, rehearsals, aftercare, and evening programs mean hundreds of people moving through campuses every day, each expecting both access and security.

That constant activity brings new challenges. A rural district with five schools has very different needs than a large urban system, but one principle always holds true: each layer of security has to work together. Cameras, access control, visitor management, and communication systems should never live in silos. When they do, things fall through the cracks, and in this work, even a few seconds matter.

That is why integration is at the center of every conversation we have. A unified ecosystem, where technology, people, and policy operate in sync, does more than strengthen response. It builds trust across the entire school community.

What integration looks like in action

When we talk about integration, we are not talking about one brand or one product. We are talking about a philosophy.

Within the ASSA ABLOY family, integration takes shape across three essential layers:

ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions (DSS) creates the foundation with secure, code-compliant door hardware, access points, and classroom locks that protect without disrupting learning. It all starts with the physical layer, the doors and hardware that form the first line of defense.

HID Global builds on that foundation by ensuring trusted identity and credentialing, verifying who is on campus and granting access only where it is needed.

Traka brings it full circle with intelligent key and asset management, providing accountability and visibility for the tools and resources that keep schools running.

Together, these systems provide more than physical protection. They create confidence. They enable rapid response under Alyssa’s Law, ensure accountability for critical assets, and help districts modernize step by step without overwhelming their budgets or staff.

We have seen it work firsthand. One Colorado district implemented a Traka key management system tied to staff ID badges, and within months, lost keys became a thing of the past. What started as a logistical fix became something bigger: a culture of accountability. Integration does not just enhance safety; it builds trust.

Beyond the technology, timing matters. The months of November and December are crucial planning periods for many districts, when budget allocations, grant opportunities, and safety initiatives align. Integration gives leaders flexibility to adapt those plans without starting over each time technology evolves.

Most importantly, integration is about people. Even the most advanced system will fall short if staff are not trained, informed, and empowered. Safety is not just a technical standard; it is a culture. When educators know what to do and have tools they trust, safety becomes second nature.

Unified by design: A reflection on School Safety Week

As School Safety Week comes to a close, we have had the privilege of standing alongside our colleagues at ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions (DSS), HID Global, and Traka to share what a truly unified approach to school safety looks like.

For both of us, this week has been about more than technology. It has been about people and purpose. Every conversation and every story shared reminds us why this work matters. We have seen how collaboration across districts, communities, and industry partners can transform how schools think about security, not as a series of products but as a shared responsibility.

The partnership among HID, ASSA ABLOY, and Traka is more than brand alignment. It is a reflection of what we want schools to model: connection, communication, and collective strength. Each solution plays a part, but together they create something much stronger, an ecosystem where identity, access, and accountability reinforce one another.

We also want to take a moment to thank the educators, facilities teams, and first responders who put these safety measures into practice every day. Technology can empower, but it is your commitment that brings safety to life. Your vigilance and teamwork are what make these systems meaningful.

Looking ahead: Building on the momentum

School Safety Week may be ending, but the work continues. As technology evolves and legislation expands, districts have an opportunity to strengthen the partnerships and practices that define safer learning environments. Our goal as PASS Directors, and as part of the ASSA ABLOY family, is to keep driving that collaboration forward.

We will continue to connect state leaders, facility managers, and technology providers to ensure every investment serves a greater purpose. Unified safety does not stop when the week ends. It is the blueprint we build on all year long.

Because when we are unified by design, safety becomes more than a plan. It becomes part of who we are.
