Firmware QA Analyst

Location: Redwood City, CA

*Please note that this is an onsite (i.e. not remote) role based in Redwood City, California.

About the company:

Founded by ex-Apple Product and Engineering leaders, ASSA ABLOY Level is redefining the smart home with technology that is simple, intuitive, useful, and invisible. At Level, we take a unique approach to designing products - one that shifts focus from what we make to how we make it and who we make it for. It’s an approach that results in elegant and unique solutions, raising the bar for the entire smart home ecosystem.

Now part of the Assa Abloy family, a global leader in access solutions, Level is positioned to accelerate innovation and expand our reach even further. This partnership strengthens our ability to deliver world-class smart home experiences while maintaining the vision and design excellence that have always set us apart.

About the role:

As a Firmware QA Analyst, you will play a critical role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and performance of our embedded firmware for smart home products. You’ll design and execute test plans, identify and isolate bugs, and collaborate closely with firmware engineers to deliver robust and dependable software releases for connected IoT devices.

You will be hands-on in validating functionality across a wide range of hardware, mobile, and cloud environments. Your work will directly impact the customer experience, ensuring that every device shipped meets the high bar for quality and usability that Level is known for.

Key projects you’ll work on:

  • Firmware validation and regression testing: Build and execute test cases for new firmware releases, covering functional, performance, and stress testing.
  • Device interoperability: Ensure firmware works seamlessly across different hardware versions, mobile apps, and third-party integrations.
  • Automation and tooling: Help develop automated test scripts and frameworks to improve coverage and efficiency in QA cycles.
  • Bug tracking and root cause analysis: Identify, document, and work with engineers to resolve defects across firmware and system layers.
  • Release readiness: Support safe and reliable rollout of over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates to thousands of deployed devices.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, implement, and maintain manual and automated test cases for embedded firmware.
  • Execute functional, regression, and stress testing across multiple product lines.
  • Collaborate with firmware engineers to reproduce, debug, and verify fixes for defects.
  • Manage test plans, document results, and contribute to release readiness reviews.
  • Ensure firmware meets performance, stability, and security standards.
  • Advocate for quality across the engineering organization by providing clear, actionable feedback.

Required Qualifications:

  • QA and testing fundamentals: Solid understanding of test planning, execution, and defect management for embedded or firmware-based products.
  • Firmware/embedded systems: Experience testing software on hardware devices (microcontrollers, IoT products, or consumer electronics).
  • Scripting and automation: Familiarity with Python or similar scripting languages for building test scripts and automation frameworks.
  • Tools and processes: Experience with bug tracking systems (e.g., Jira), version control (Git), and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills: Ability to isolate issues, perform root cause analysis, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Communication: Strong ability to collaborate with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Growth mindset: Eagerness to learn new tools, processes, and technologies as the QA function evolves.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The salary range for this role is $75K-$85K and we consider a broad scope of factors when making compensation decisions.

  • In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, a bonus plan, a 401(k) plan, education assistance, and an environment that reflects our commitment to our employees.

More about ASSA ABLOY Level Home:

When we look around our homes today, we see opportunity. We see “smart” products that lack utility and connected devices that push us further apart. We see consumers with high expectations, current standards set too low, and products that simply fail to deliver.

ASSA ABLOY Level is re-inventing the standard. We’re redefining “smart”, to center around thoughtfulness, practicality, and the people who make the problem worth solving. We approach product design with a blank slate, zero assumptions, and an open mind because the way a problem is defined sets the stage for its solution. We couple deep expertise with unbridled curiosity, because to us “smart” means simple, intuitive, and useful.

We start with empathy, take new perspectives, and challenge existing standards. People are at the heart of what we do, and respecting their style, choices, and preferences is the first step to uncovering a thoughtful solution that truly improves their daily lives. After all, we’re not just designing products for a house, we are designing them for the people who make it a home.

ASSA ABLOY Level is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, disability or genetic information, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin.
