Position Overview / Summary

The Engineer will actively work with operations, sales, intercompany engineering and supply chain staff to integrate the manufacture and/or sourcing of hardware and components. To participate in the development of manufacturing strategies and to optimize manufacturing by location. To develop and execute product and process designs and to participate in the commissioning and qualification of new machinery, processes and products as necessary. To recommend and implement automation solutions that improve efficiency, reduce heavy manual work, and enable the utilization of skilled workers for more complicated production

 

Key Responsibilities

The Engineer will be accountable for:

  • Implementing automation projects using both fixed and flexible automation solutions.
  • Enhancing existing machinery and processes.
  • Designing and developing new manufacturing processes.
  • Leading and participating in the troubleshooting and optimization of existing roll forming, stamping, assembly and plastics manufacturing processes and equipment, including meeting equipment and process design parameters for safety, throughput, and quality.
  • Evaluating and planning shop floor layout of machinery and production processes.
  • Performing or participating in make vs. buy analysis and decisions.
  • Creating drawings and documenting machinery and process changes as necessary.
  • Purchasing materials for engineering projects as necessary.
  • Providing technical support to other departments, including Sales, Production, Purchasing, Quality and Maintenance.
  • Actively participating in continuous improvement and Lean initiatives.
  • Managing vendors and contractors for projects
  • Coordinating with sales, sourcing, planning, engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams.
  • Working closely with with sales and all other relevant stakeholder departments to gather feedback and improve products.
  • Identifying opportunities for process improvements and cost reductions.
  • Other Duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Mechanical engineering bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • 3 years working as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in BC, Canada.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the development, design and commissioning of manufacturing machinery, equipment, and tooling.
  • Demonstrated success with the implementation of automation solutions, both with and without robotics.
  • Experience developing and designing control systems for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical and PLC controlled systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and documents.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects and objectives and prioritizing according to business needs.
  • Experience preparing and defending business cases for project proposals.

 

The following qualifications would be an asset:

  • Experience with overhead door components, window reinforcements, and other building products.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of metal forming, tooling and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of manual and CNC processes including lathes, mills, EDM, welding and fabrication.
  • Knowledge of formal quality assurance programs and lean manufacturing practices.

  • Quality Assurance: Experience with quality control processes and standards.
  • Software Proficiency: Strong skills with SolidWorks CAD software, MS Office applications, project management tools, and other relevant technologies.
  • Negotiation: Skills to negotiate with suppliers, vendors, and stakeholders

 

Physical Demands

  • Mobility: Ability to move around the manufacturing floor, including standing and walking for extended periods. Ability to sit for extended hours.
  • Manual Dexterity: Occasional use of hands and fingers to use desktop computer and keyboard, handle tools, operate equipment, and inspect products.
  • Lifting: Ability to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Visual Acuity: Good vision for reading technical drawings, inspecting products, and working with computer screens.
  • Hearing: Ability to hear and communicate effectively in a noisy manufacturing environment.
  • Climbing/Balancing: Occasionally required to climb ladders or balance on equipment.
  • Stooping/Kneeling: Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch to inspect products or equipment.

Role Requirements

Location: Abbotsford, BC Canada

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week
